Last Monday evening I was babysitting my grandsons at my son’s house. About 11 PM, I let Lucy out into the backyard for a final pee. Big, big mistake! I heard her take off after something, then she immediately came running back and the smell of skunk permeated the air.
Earlier in the evening I had bathed Lucy… and here I was bathing her again! However, when my son came home a few moments after it happened, he checked the Internet and found that you’re supposed to wipe off the skunk spray first with paper towels! If you bathe the dog without doing this, it spreads the oily skunk spray around. Oops, too late! The home remedy is dish soap, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, but we only had dish soap handy. So I just bathed her with baby shampoo and flushed her eyes with lots of clear water. Afterwards, she stopped rubbing her eyes, so that was a good thing. I took her home and we had a stinky night!
The next day I met my son at Bosley’s where they had run out of skunk deodorizer, so we tried another home remedy: Listerine Mouthwash! My son babysat Lucy that day since I had to take my 92-year-old mum to the doctor’s, lunch and shopping in Richmond. On the way back I picked up some skunk deodorizer at a different Bosley’s. When I got to my son’s I applied the deodorizer and then bathed Lucy again. So, after three baths — the final one with skunk deodorizer — ten days later she only faintly smells of skunk!
